Itinerary

From the very start, this journey takes you deep into the heart of northern Vietnam’s breathtaking landscapes and rich culture. After setting off from Hanoi, the drive offers glimpses of peaceful countryside, with verdant fields and small villages dotting the scenery.  A stop in Tan Yen town for lunch introduces you to the rustic flavors of Tuyen Quang province, preparing you for the cultural treasures ahead. One such highlight is the sacred Doi Co Cau Ma Temple, standing gracefully on the bank of the Lo River, where history, local legends, and spiritual tradition converge in a tranquil setting. Upon reaching Ha Giang city, a brief visit to Km0 marks your arrival at the gateway to Vietnam’s far north. Here, the adventure truly begins, as the road winds higher into the mountains. The next stop, Quan Ba Heaven Gate, offers a panoramic view of Tam Son town and the famed Fairy Twin Mountains, whose perfectly rounded shapes and surrounding green valleys create one of the region’s most iconic landscapes. The day winds down with your arrival in Yen Minh, a quiet highland town surrounded by limestone peaks and lush forests. After checking into your hotel, enjoy a hearty dinner featuring local specialties, then spend the evening at leisure—strolling through the peaceful streets or simply relaxing before the next day’s scenic journey. Overnight in Yen Minh.

After breakfast, depart to explore the majestic beauty of the Dong Van Karst Plateau Global Geopark. Along the way, visit Pho Cao, known for its traditional H’Mong houses surrounded by stone fences, and Sung La village, home to ancient earthen-walled H’Mong houses, including the one featured in the award-winning 2006 film Pao’s Story. Pause to admire and photograph the seasonal buckwheat flowers near the nine-turn slope. Continue to the Palace of the Meo King – Vuong Chinh Duc, once the residence of the most powerful family in Dong Van in the early 20th century, then head to Lung Cu Flagpole, marking Vietnam’s northernmost point. After lunch, explore the century-old Dong Van Old Quarter, where you can enjoy a cup of coffee in its charming setting (at your own expense). Journey along the spectacular 16km Ma Pi Leng Pass, the most beautiful stretch of the legendary “Happiness Road,” and stop to capture the breathtaking views of Tu San Gorge, Vietnam’s deepest canyon. Take a boat trip on the Nho Que River to admire the gorge from below, a dramatic waterway flowing along the foot of Ma Pi Leng Pass (boat and motorbike taxi fees not included). In the evening, enjoy dinner before checking in to your hotel. Overnight in Dong Van.

In the morning, wake up and enjoy breakfast, then take some time to savor a cup of aromatic coffee in the charming old town of Dong Van. Here, the unique atmosphere blends a fresh, lively spirit with the timeless character of the Dong Van stone plateau, offering a perfect moment to soak in the tranquil yet vibrant surroundings. Stroll through the narrow streets, admire the ancient architecture, and feel the distinct cultural heartbeat of this highland town before beginning the day’s journey. After breakfast, board the bus and set off toward Cao Bang, continuing your adventure through the captivating landscapes of Northeast Vietnam. Along the way, the route takes you past winding mountain roads, verdant valleys, and scenic viewpoints that invite you to pause and take in the vast, unspoiled beauty of the region. Around midday, stop at a local restaurant to enjoy a hearty lunch featuring some of the most distinctive and flavorful dishes of the Northeast. The meal offers a delicious insight into the region’s culinary heritage, with ingredients sourced from the surrounding mountains and prepared in traditional styles. Following lunch, resume the drive to Cao Bang, passing through charming rural villages and stunning natural scenery. As evening approaches, arrive in Cao Bang city, check into your hotel, and unwind after the day’s travel. Enjoy a relaxing dinner at a local restaurant, then spend the night in Cao Bang, resting up for the exciting explorations that await the next day.

After breakfast, set out for one of the most spectacular natural landmarks in Vietnam—Ban Gioc Waterfall. The journey itself is a visual delight, with the road winding through lush valleys, verdant rice terraces, and karst mountains that rise dramatically against the skyline. Along the way, there will be stops to capture the breathtaking scenery, offering ample opportunities for memorable photographs. A midday pause in Quang Uyen allows you to enjoy a satisfying local lunch before continuing onward. Soon, the sound of rushing water grows louder, heralding your arrival at Ban Gioc Waterfall. Towering 53 meters high and cascading over three terraces, this magnificent site is not only the most beautiful waterfall in Vietnam but also the largest in Southeast Asia. Straddling the Vietnam–China border, it ranks among the world’s top four largest border waterfalls and presents a truly majestic sight. The adventure continues with a visit to Nguom Ngao Cave, also known as Tiger Cave. This vast cavern stretches for several kilometers and is adorned with stunning stalactites and stalagmites shaped over millions of years. Its grandeur and natural artistry make it one of the most impressive caves in northern Vietnam. Before returning to Cao Bang, stop at Phuc Sen Blacksmith Village, where generations of craftsmen have honed their skills in forging high-quality knives and tools by hand—a traditional craft that remains vibrant to this day. In the early evening, arrive back in Cao Bang city. Enjoy a flavorful dinner, then check into your hotel to rest. Later, you may explore the lively night market in the city center, where local specialties—especially the region’s famous roasted chestnuts—are a must-try. Overnight in Cao Bang.

After checking out and having breakfast, begin the journey to Pac Bo, a site of profound historical significance in Vietnam’s revolutionary history. Upon arrival, explore the Pac Bo Historical Relic Site, where President Ho Chi Minh lived and worked in the early years of the resistance war against French colonial rule from 1941 to 1945. Stroll along the tranquil Lenin Stream, framed by lush greenery, and admire the imposing Karl Marx Mountain. Visit Coc Bo Cave, a modest but powerful symbol of the revolutionary struggle, where important strategic decisions were made during those pivotal years. This serene yet historic landscape offers both a glimpse into the past and a moment for reflection. Depart Pac Bo and head toward Ba Be, traveling through a series of breathtaking mountain passes. The route takes you across Tai Ho Sin Pass, Cao Bac Pass, Khau Khang Pass, and Gio Pass, each offering panoramic views of rugged peaks, deep valleys, and winding rivers far below. The scenery here is a photographer’s dream, with every turn revealing another striking vista. Stop at Deo Gio for a leisurely lunch, where you can rest and enjoy local dishes prepared with fresh, regional ingredients. After the meal, continue the scenic drive to Ba Be National Park, arriving in the late afternoon. Check in to your accommodation and take a moment to relax, surrounded by the tranquil atmosphere of the mountains and lake. In the evening, enjoy a warm and hearty dinner, perhaps featuring specialties of the Tay ethnic group. The rest of the night is free for you to unwind, listen to the sounds of nature, and prepare for the next day’s exploration of Ba Be Lake. Overnight in Ba Be.

After enjoying breakfast at the stilt house, take a moment to relax and immerse yourself in the tranquil beauty of Ba Be Lake as the early morning mist hovers over the water. The peaceful atmosphere, combined with the gentle sounds of nature, offers the perfect start to your day. Before checking out, you may choose to stroll along the lake’s edge or simply sit back and take in the serene views. At 08:00, head to the boat dock for a leisurely cruise on Ba Be Lake, one of Vietnam’s most stunning natural wonders. As the boat glides across the calm waters, you’ll have the chance to capture incredible photos and visit notable sites around the lake. The first stop is Fairy Pond, a charming and secluded spot tucked away in a corner of the lake, surrounded by lush mountains. According to legend, this was once a gathering place where fairies came to play chess, adding a mystical charm to the already enchanting scenery. Next, visit An Ma Temple, perched on a small mountain in the middle of the lake. Steeped in history, this temple is linked to the events of the Le–Mac dynasty feud. Local stories recount that loyal generals of the Mac dynasty, after being defeated, took refuge in Puong Cave and chose to end their lives there. Out of respect, the villagers built a temple to honor them, but to protect it from destruction by the Le army, they renamed it “An Ma,” meaning “peaceful grave” in the Tay ethnic language. Continue the boat trip to Widow Island, a picturesque little island in the heart of Ba Be Lake. The island is associated with a touching legend about the lake’s creation, making it a symbolic and photogenic highlight of your visit. The boat will slowly circle the island, allowing plenty of time for photos. Around 11:30, enjoy a delicious lunch at a local restaurant. After the meal, board the bus for your return journey to Hanoi. The drive offers one last chance to admire the mountainous landscapes of the North before arriving in the capital around 17:30. The program concludes with warm goodbyes and best wishes, leaving you with unforgettable memories of your journey through Ha Giang, Cao Bang, and Ba Be.
